Yesterday the Star Tribune reported that the Trump administration never really intended to cooperate with Minnesota law enforcement authorities when they said they would share evidence in the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.
That sound you hear is the truth being buried.
As of this writing, there is no statement, no media interview, no social media post from MAGA Republican Senator Julia Coleman demanding the feds turn over the evidence to our state investigators.
There is no demand for justice for Renee Good and Alex Pretti from Senator Coleman.
Sadly, the senator’s silence is all too predictable.
Constituent Service?
Coleman had nothing to say when Renee Good was shot in the face by the senator’s constituent, Jonathan Ross. When questioned by reporter David Noriega about that silence, she defended herself by saying, “My hope was that was an isolated incident.”
That reads to me like she was hoping the news cycle would do its work and eventually some other story would wash Renee Good from the headlines.
Because then Coleman wouldn’t have to address the fact that the federal agent who killed Renee Good, called her a “fucking bitch” as she rolled to her death, and refused to come to her aid was Coleman’s constituent. And a massive Trump supporter, according to neighbors.
Coleman has not publicly demanded that Jonathan Ross be handed over to Minnesota officials for interrogation for his role in the death of Renee Good.
That’s some perverse definition of constituent service. Representing a constituent does not mean shielding that constituent from legal scrutiny.
It appears the only reason Coleman spoke out at all was that politics demanded a statement after the killing of Alex Pretti by Trump’s masked agents.
And what was her response? It wasn’t a demand that Trump withdraw his masked terrorists from the streets of Minnesota and Carver County and go the fuck home. It was a strongly worded letter of capitulation clothed in the language of compromise.
She’s running on “accountability” but refuses to demand accountablity for the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti at the hands of federal agents.
This is not just a failure of leadership by Senator Coleman; it is a moral failure.
Actual Constituent Service
You know who was actively leading in Carver County’s moment of crisis? It wasn’t a politician deliberating what to say when, calculating the political pros and cons of whether to speak out or not.
It was neighbors understanding the need to act to protect our own. It was boots on the ground delivering groceries to those too frightened to set foot outside. It was individual citizens standing guard at bus stops to ensure children make it to school safely. It was constitutional observers bearing witness to violations of our constitutional rights.
It was Dan Kessler, Coleman’s challenger, performing the real constituent service Julia Coleman had abandoned. In the video below, Kessler reports on ICE activity while on patrol as a constitutional observer.
That is what constituent service looks like. Character is revealed most clearly when the stakes matter the most.
