I was afraid this would happen, but people said I was being dramatic—and now we are waiting again. As of August 21, the FDA has selected the XFG variant for the updated 2026–27 COVID vaccine, but it has not yet granted final approval to the new products. That means the updated vaccine is not yet being shipped to clinics and pharmacies.
Trump has nominated Dr. Heidi Overton to lead the FDA. She has opposed COVID-vaccine mandates and supported Trump’s effort to separate the MMR vaccine into individual shots—a change public-health experts say is not supported by evidence. She has not yet been confirmed.
I’m afraid she will not allow the distribution of this year’s COVID vaccine, which is supposed to protect us from the new variants. A vaccine that uses proven methods and has solid evidence that it works could be denied to us or made available only to a limited number of people, against the advice of the medical community.
If you don’t want to get the vaccine, that is your choice. But I want to have the choice to take it or not, and that choice may be taken away from us. This will have long-term consequences, ranging from death and lost time due to illness to long-term health problems. If you had the vaccine last year, you will have some protection against this year’s variants, but I want to have as much protection as I can!
Again, there is this hypocrisy of Trump saying he believes in states’ rights, parental rights, etc., but then taking choices away from the states and from us.
On Saturday, we have the school supply drive. Please bring items to the volunteers near the refreshment table or flag one of us down. Let’s make sure kids can start the school year off strong.
I am hoping to be there this Saturday. I have missed you all and can’t wait to see your signs and feel your courage. You are all amazing.
Judith.
