I have been big supporter of this endeavor but now questioning name: Chaska Drinking Liberally

as it can be misleading. Love a drink or 2 esp with like-minded people but could we consider a different title?

Hi Jeannie! Thanks for the comment! Is it Chaska or "Drinking Liberally" that you are uncomfortable with? If it's Drinking Liberally, I get it. I'm a teetotaler but I did like the cheeky turn of words.

We are somewhat limited in what we can call ourselves under the National Organization (LivingLiberally.org). I am absolutely open to whatever the group decides to name ourselves.

Here's their guidelines on naming the organization if we want to use their infrastructure:

Living Liberally is the umbrella organization for volunteer-led, local, regular-meeting social gatherings around progressive politics. When you join or start a chapter, though, you find the group that's right for you:

Drinking Liberally. Happy hours at local bars and restaurants. You share a drink while you share your ideas. Bars have a long history of being democratic spaces and we're adding to that history each week! Drinking Liberally is the original and most popular of our Living Liberally communities. (You don't have to drink alcohol to enjoy "Drinking Liberally" plenty of regulars drink water, soda, coffee, or juice. And even when drinking liberally, always drink responsibly, and never drive under the influence of alcohol.)

Laughing Liberally. Laughing Liberally is a progressive political comedy show which uses humor and laughter to spread understanding of liberal ideas and advance progressive values. Showcasing the brightest progressive comedians from all across the nation in an off-Broadway show in New York City, on a national tour, and in locally produced chapters across the country, Laughing Liberally will save democracy one laugh at a time.

Reading Liberally. Progressive book clubs! Local organizers can decide with members how books are chosen. Living Liberally has some relationships with authors and publishers if useful to local hosts.

Eating Liberally. Group meals with a side of politics. Gather in a local restaurant or bar to share a meal while sharing your progressive values. (Eating Liberally is a popular choice in communities where the phrase "Drinking Liberally" might not resonate.)

While all of these are part of Living Liberally, each chapter must be identified as one of the programs above.

So, what do you all think? Let's talk about at our next couple of gatherings. :-)

Can't be at next social get together but do like 'Laughing Liberally'. Also, does it need to be limited to Chaska as there are people involved there from all over even though i realize Chaska is venue where we meet

Michael - I've been at several of the Chaske events. Love the work you are doing, and thank you.

Here's a thought though: at one of protests recently, some goof rolled down his window and shouted "Go home, you liberals" (or something to that effect). It made me think: This movement is not about liberal vs. conservative. One of my favorite signs says "We don't have a disagreement about policy. We have a disagreement about morality". True dat, I say. So if people who identifiy as "conservative" understood that, they should able to join us without a qualm. So i suggest we avoid the "liberal" label, as in "Drinking Liberally". I am a liberal, but ideally we might consider ourselves "Patriots", a label which any American who believes in Democracy and rule of law can be comfortable with.

Hi Henry! Great points! You may have read my previous post about our naming limitations as set by the National Organization, Living Liberally. So, we have our hands tied on naming.

I absolutely agree with your point about us bringing in people other than liberals to our movement. In fact, that's why I stepped back from leading the protests last week so that I can focus on a project that brings in both swing and conservative voters. (More on that in coming weeks)

That said, Drinking Liberally IS geared toward liberals. It is a safe space for like-minded progressive thinking people. As an example, one of our member's husband is a Trumper and Drinking Liberally is one space she can let her guard down and speak freely.

So, I agree with inclusive language at our protests for those inclined... but Drinking Liberally is designed as a fun place to be around those very people who do think like us and have a good time. Thanks for understanding! :-)
